Asiana Airlines, now officially known as Air Seoul Inc., is a South Korean airline that has played a significant role in the aviation industry since its establishment. Here's a brief history of Asiana Airlines up until my last knowledge update in September 2021:

1988: Asiana Airlines was founded on February 17, 1988, and started operations in December of the same year. The airline was established to compete with the dominant Korean Air and to enhance competition in the South Korean aviation market.

Early 1990s: Asiana Airlines began expanding its international routes, connecting South Korea with various destinations in Asia, Europe, and North America. The airline aimed to establish itself as a global carrier with a focus on high-quality service.

1997 Asian Financial Crisis: Like many other airlines, Asiana Airlines faced challenges during the Asian financial crisis. However, the airline managed to navigate the crisis and continue its operations.

2000s: Asiana Airlines continued to grow its fleet and expand its route network, gaining a reputation for its comfortable cabins and attentive service. It introduced new aircraft to its fleet, including the Airbus A380 for long-haul routes.

2010s: Asiana Airlines faced several incidents during this period, including accidents and operational challenges. Despite these setbacks, the airline remained committed to improving its safety measures and overall service quality.

2020: The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on the aviation industry worldwide, including Asiana Airlines. The airline, like many others, faced reduced demand for air travel, leading to decreased revenues and operational challenges.

Recent Developments (up to September 2021):

Acquisition by Korea Development Bank (KDB): In 2020, due to financial difficulties exacerbated by the pandemic, Asiana Airlines faced the possibility of bankruptcy. To prevent this, the South Korean government, through the state-owned Korea Development Bank, stepped in with a plan to acquire the airline. The acquisition aimed to stabilize the company and ensure its continued operation.

Merger with Korean Air: In November 2020, it was announced that Asiana Airlines would merge with its larger domestic competitor, Korean Air. The merger was expected to create a more robust and competitive airline that could better navigate the challenges posed by the pandemic and the changing aviation landscape. The merger was subject to regulatory approvals and was expected to be completed in the coming years.

Please note that my information is accurate up until September 2021, and there may have been further developments or changes in the status of Asiana Airlines since that time.
